10x what you **must** see in Alicante — locals’ favorites

Image

Alicante has everything.

With your towel over your shoulder you can stroll straight from your hotel to the promenade for breakfast. Then take a dip in the sea. And on the way back you walk along the famous Explanada back to your lovely accommodation. But Alicante is **more** than sun and beach. This city is full of beautiful places — from colorful neighborhoods to viewpoints and lively markets.

As a local I’m sharing my 10 favorite sights in Alicante. Not only the well-known highlights, but also a few hidden gems you might not have on your radar yet. Perfect for a weekend getaway or if you’re already in the city and want to check what you really shouldn’t miss!

1. Visit the Castillo de Santa Bárbara for the best view over Alicante

You can’t miss it: Santa Bárbara Castle towers above the city and is one of the oldest in Spain. The climb up (or the lift from the beach) is rewarded with a spectacular view over Alicante, the harbor and the mountains beyond. This is simply a **must-see** — also to get a good feel for the city.

Tip : go just before sunset for magical light and fewer crowds.

Want to hear the magical story about the face you can see in this mountain? Then book your Highlights bike tour with Baja Bikes or a private walking tour with Monique.

2. Stroll along the Explanada de España — Alicante’s promenade

This promenade made of millions of colored tiles snakes along the coast and is the city’s beating heart. This is where locals stroll with an ice cream and street musicians play.

A lovely place to just sit and watch. On one of the wooden folding chairs, for example — they’re there especially so you can have a nice chat in the shade of the palm trees. And no one would ever think of taking those chairs with them.

3. Discover the ‘barrio’ Santa Cruz — the most colorful part of Alicante

Small white houses, narrow alleyways full of flowers and tiles, and steps everywhere — welcome to Santa Cruz. This old fishermen’s quarter lies against the hillside and feels like a little village of its own. Go early in the morning or around sunset for peace and atmosphere.

Tip : the prettiest little street is right opposite the square next to Swallow Coffee. After a nice breakfast, walk up past the square and take the steps towards the castle.

4. Soak up the vibe at the Mercado Central of Alicante

Fancy fresh **jamón**, local cheeses or delicious olives and nuts? Then you **must** go to the Mercado Central. Watch locals do their shopping and sample the atmosphere and local products. What to try for sure? A **magdalena** cupcake from the bakery, freshly roasted nuts, fruit you’ve never seen before (at the back of the market hall), or one of the typical tapas at a local bar.

TIP : Want a tour to hear all the local ins & outs? Check here. I work with Carlos, who has been organizing tours at the market for 20 years!

5. Relax on Playa del Postiguet — Alicante’s city beach

This beach sits right on the edge of the center next to the Meliá hotel. Fine sand, clear water and a view of the castle. Rent a lounger or flop down in the sand, and wrap up with a cocktail at one of the beach bars.

Tip : Too busy on this beach? Take the tram to Playa San Juan.

6. Take a day trip to Isla de Tabarca — snorkeling, strolling and eating fish

Looking for a mini adventure? Take the boat to Tabarca, a small island off the coast that used to be a pirate nest. Nowadays you can wander through charming streets, snorkel in crystal-clear water and eat fresh fish by the sea. A day out yet still close by.

Tip : Want to avoid long queues? Book your tickets in advance here.

Tip : Do check the weather ! There isn’t a whole lot to do on this island besides sunbathing. You’ll find up-to-date weather reports for Alicante here.

7. Escape the bustle in the palm park El Palmeral

Just outside the center, to the south of the city, lies this park — often skipped — which has recently been completely renovated and reopened. Think bridges, ponds, palm trees and even small waterfalls. An ideal spot for a morning walk or to briefly escape the crowds. And perfect for kids to play in one of the playgrounds.

Tip : Sometimes the atmosphere can feel a bit edgy here in the evening at dusk. Better to go during the day.

8. Dive into history at the MARQ museum in Alicante

The archaeological museum is anything but stuffy or boring. With interactive exhibitions and lots of variety you dive into the region’s history — from the Romans to the Middle Ages. Perfect for an hour of culture (and air-con!).

Tip : there are often special concerts and events because of the great acoustics.

Tip 9: Take a tour through the hinterland

Personally, this is my favorite. Hit the road by car to villages where time seems to have stood still: Jijona, Alcoy or Busot. Have lunch at a **menú** restaurant where **la mamá** still cooks the tastiest dishes herself.

Tip 10: Go horseback riding or mountain biking

Up for it? Explore Spain’s Costa Blanca on horseback — or keep control yourself and cycle through the region. Rent a bike.
