24-hour pharmacy

There is always at least one pharmacy in Alicante that is open around the clock. It is called a Farmacia de Guardia, and it changes every day.

The button below finds the nearest one. Enter the date under fecha and the town you are in under localidad, for example Alicante.

Alicante at its best

Best time to visit Alicante & the Costa Blanca

This is the question I get most often. My answer barely changes: come in spring or in early autumn.

April, May and June The land is still green, the terraces are open and you can be outside all day without looking for shade. The sea is still fresh in May. From mid June onwards swimming is comfortable.

July and August Warm and lively. Half of Spain is on holiday and you notice it along the coast. If you are looking for calm, this is not your season. If you do come: start your day early and keep the afternoon free.

September and October My own favourite. The sea is at its warmest, the beaches empty out and the terraces stay open. October still gives you plenty of sun at pleasant temperatures.

November to March Mild, bright and quiet. During the day you often sit in the sun in shirtsleeves; in the evening the jacket goes on. Some beach bars close along the coast, but the cities and the inland villages carry on. For walking this is the finest season of the year.

Two dates to keep in mind The Hogueras de San Juan in Alicante run from 20 to 24 June every year. Remarkable to witness, but the city fills up and hotels are booked far in advance. Semana Santa falls differently each year, in March or April, and is also a busy week.

Care you plan for

Fertility treatment and egg donation in Alicante

For twelve years I worked in the IVF department of Clínica Vistahermosa. I know the corridors, the laboratory and the team you will meet there.

The clinic specialises in egg donation and IVF and has its own international department, where you are helped in your own language. No waiting lists, an in-house laboratory and a genetics department in the same building.

Want to know what a treatment costs and how it works in Spain first: I wrote it out in my article on egg donation and IVF in Alicante .

Getting around

Getting around the Costa Blanca without your own car

You do not always need a car here. The coastline is well connected, and the tram is one of the finest ways to see this stretch of coast.

The TRAM Line 1 leaves from Luceros in the centre of Alicante and runs along the coast to Benidorm, stopping at El Campello and Villajoyosa among others. From Benidorm, line 9 takes you on to Altea, Calpe and Dénia. That last stretch is being upgraded, so check the timetable before you set off.

Bus ALSA runs directly from the airport to Benidorm. For the centre of Alicante, take city bus C6. It stops close to the station and the beach.

Train The Cercanías connects Alicante with Elche, Orihuela and Murcia. High-speed trains to Madrid leave from the same station.

Inland it is a different story. Public transport is thin on the ground there, and a car is the calmest option.

Out on the road

Renting a car on the Costa Blanca

A car takes you to the villages and the bays where no bus goes. The A7 and the N-332 connect the coastal towns; the toll roads are quiet and well maintained.

Book in advance through a site you trust. At the airport itself the rates are higher and the queues are longer. I work with Sunny Cars.
