About the Costa Blanca Markets
At the market you see how people here actually live. What is in season, what they cook at home, how early a village wakes up. Every market has its own rhythm.
You will find fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and olives, clothes and things for the house. And the sound of traders calling to each other across the stalls.
My own favourite is the market in El Campello . The peppers are three times the size of those in the Netherlands, and at almost every stall you will find what we call “forgotten vegetables”, still part of the everyday range here. Everything is fresh and of good quality.
In the photo on the right you can see my good friend from the market in El Campello . He has since retired. Having a chat with him was always a good moment of the day.
Useful tips for market visitors
At the market you buy whatever is there that day. Local products, with a piece of Spanish culture alongside. Go early, around nine. Everything is still fresh then and the square is quiet.
Bring cash, as plenty of stalls do not take cards. And taste the turrón and the jamón ibérico, even if you were not planning to buy anything.
Parking is free almost everywhere. At some markets there are people who watch your car and ask a euro for it. That is part of the local scene; you are not obliged to give anything.
Take your time. A market here is also a place where people meet.
